18.30: WORKING WITH INJURIES: Past, Present, & Future

Everyone, even yogis,  will injure themselves at some point in their life - often unconsciously during an accident or repetitive overuse. When injured, our body automatically uses a variety of natural healing mechanisms to aid in recovery. Often, we ignore or discount these forces, and choose quicker remedies (drugs or surgery) to relieve the pain or symptoms. These quick remedies often heal the physical body, but leave the “memory” of the injury in the “psychology” of the person - the nervous system and connective tissues, which can create reoccurring problems .

In this class, Peter will show remedies using asana for a variety of common injuries, including those that often show up in yoga practitioners. Using volunteers from the class, Peter will explain the types of yogic movement that support the body’s natural healing forces over the different stages of an injury, and then guide the class through these movements.   This knowledge will help students heal existing or old injuries - physically and physiologically, and also give tools to heal from future injuries.

For those who have current injuries, modifications will be shown to help.

20.15: "SPINE MECHANICS - Anatomical Function and Misconceptions"

In one way or another, the spine is intricately involved in all yoga asana. Anatomically, the spine has the ability to function in eight unique directions - forward & back bending; left & right side bending; left & right spinal rotation (twisting); extension and compression. Within each Yoga Asana, its shape has been developed to encourage greater range of motion, flexibility and strength for the spine in all the infinite possibilities a spine is capable of moving.

In this unique class, we explore five fundamentals which assist movement in the spine - a.) Elongation; b.) Chest Dropping; c.) Belly Consciousness; d.) Bone Softening; and e.)Rebounding. Comparing these movements with anatomical function of the spine, many of the misconceptions about how the spine works will be demonstrated and discussed.

The class is designed for intermediate practitioners, and will be part lecture, part practice.
